Social Media: More Than a Fad

The allure of social media is beginning to entice those who were once leery. Organizations that once considered it unnecessary are finding that participating in social media is now standard practice. But before charging the tech-savvy person in the office with the task of setting up accounts, consider what it will take to successfully leverage a social platform.

Management

Hiring a full-time person to manage social media channels may not be an option for many organizations. Oftentimes, this task is assigned to someone in marketing or the tech-savvy person. Other groups find that hiring a consultant to help create a strategy and set up the platforms works best. Regardless, management of social sites will require someone engaging with followers on the site, developing content, and reviewing analytics for the site.

Content

Content is king, and knowing what the customer wants to read and share is key. Although promoting products and services seems like great content to push through social media, that shouldn’t be the focus. Providing content that teaches rather than promotes is more accepting. Also consider sharing photos and videos. People tend to look at a post longer if pictures or videos are attached.

Cost

Creating a Facebook or Twitter account only requires an e-mail address. However, it becomes clear that there are costs associated with developing a successful social media campaign. New content won’t magically appear. Someone has to create and curate content, as well as monitor feedback and social statistics. If managing the social sites in-house, the proper monitoring tools also need to be purchased.

The social media landscape changes from week to week—new platforms are created and new features are added to old platforms. Developing a plan before launching into social media will save time and ensure a successful takeoff.
